The Stoke and After
THE ‘STROKE’ AND AFTER-EFFECTS.
B. Yerram Raju
It has been a year since I got
the paralytic stroke on the right side. The
day was 8th August, 2024. I understood later it is more to my voice
than to the other parts of the body. My wife and last bother-in-law, Chiranjivi
admitted me to the ICU of the CARE hospital, Banjara Hills at the instance of
Dr. S. Behara. I did not know a bit thereafter. Both the voice and walking
crippled. But improvement started. This article will unfold to readers the
facts behind the stroke and the steps to be taken thereafter.
Wife matters a lot:
My wife Mrs. Venkata Naga
Satyavati (hereafter referred as Satyavati) took me to hospital CARE admitted
to the Intensive Care Unit. She took care of my diet and medication, two
essentials when a ‘Stroke’ occurs. Choosing a right hospital matters. But when
choices are limited she did the best on 8th August 2024. She defines
‘Karyeshu (work like a labourer); ‘Karneshu mantri (advice like a minister); ‘Bhojyeshu
mata (feeds like mother); and ‘Sayaneshu Rambha (sleeps like a damsel).
Caretaker Matters:
Tirupathi, the caretaker was identified
by my first and second daughters, Satya Sudha and Swati who took care of me, my
morning and evening walk at home and my morning chores and bath. This went on for five months.
Paternal care:
My eldest daughter, staying in Abu Dhabi, came on the 8th
August ’24 night and preferred to stay close to me in a Hotel for five days. I
moved from the ICCU to the single room after three days. The Neuro Physicians
of the CARE Hospital used to visit every morning at 10-11hrs and guide the
nurses. My second daughter, Mrs. Swati followed at 11th August,’24
and my third daughter Mrs. Shanti Waghrey followed to take care of me for Six
months. Both Swati and Shanti took care of my bank accounts and deposits by
converting them to joint accounts with my wife Satyavathi. I should give credit
to all my sons-in-law, Mr. Srinivasa Rao, Mr. Ramavatharam, and Mr. Vikas Waghrey
for sparing their wives to attend on me.
Friends:
I could know who my friends are.
All my friends called on me. The
officials from Telangana Industrial Health Clinic Ltd., established by
me for the Government of Telangana also called on me at my house. Top Officials
from the RBI also called on me to empathise with me. None from the State Bank
of India that I served for twenty-eight years could see me. All my walking
associates called on me.
Physiotherapy & Speech
therapy:
Physiotherapy for the rest of the
life is very important. It involves 35 steps. A physiotherapist attends on me
for one hour every day. Speech therapist, when becomes routine, one can stop
it. Both are costly. But they cost less then a physician every day. Sugar and
Blood Pressure monthly are important tests one should undergo.
The Lessons:
Wife and paternal care matter
most. Caretaker is important and should be there at least for two hours a day.
A good physician is important. My third daughter Shanti arranged for Dr. Pulla
Rao of Kamineni Hospital to visit me every week. Physiotherapist for the rest
of my life and Speech therapist for three weeks at least are important. I
undergo sugar and Blood Pressure tests every week and blood and cholesterol, once
in a quarter, are important tests for
every veteran.
Thick water for two months, warm
water thereafter till one gets normalcy, Timely diet, medication as suggested
by the Physician are important and should
not be avoided.
